Mary Ann Solovieff Obituary
Mary Ann Solovieff Mill Valley resident Mary Ann Solovieff, died May 24th, 2014, at her home in Mill Valley, California. Mrs. Solovieff was born October 12, 1924, in Kearny, Nebraska, to Delos Irving and Margaret (Gannon) Reynolds. She attended Fremont High School in Nebraska and took courses at the University of Omaha. She worked as a journalist in Omaha at the beginning of "the Jet Age." She married Eugene N. Solovieff on June 3rd, 1950, in Nebraska, with a reception in Berkeley, California. She came to California in the 1950s when her husband began his orthopedic practice at St. Mary's Hospital in San Francisco. They remained there, with a few years in Dallas, Texas, where their son Michael was born, while Gene completed his Orthopedic residency in work with crippled children at Highland Hospital. She was a homemaker for over 55 years and did volunteer work at St. Mary's Hospital for the Ladies Auxiliary as well as at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, where her children attended grammar school. She was a lifetime member of the American Association of University Women. She lived in the same house in Mill Valley from 1956 until her passing. Always interested in crafts and needlework, her children and grandchildren have many knitted blankets and scarves, and their homes are graced with several needlepoint pieces she created. Mary Ann and Gene enjoyed playing contract and duplicate bridge. They entertained often, lovingly welcoming their many friends into their home for dinners and their annual Russian Easter party. They traveled the world, seeing many countries and exotic locales, bringing mementos back to their children, and instilling in them a love of travel. Her family wrote: "Mary Ann's intelligence and humor were a source of inspiration and joy to her family. She lived her life with joy, laughter, and integrity." She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kate and Jim Martin of San Rafael; son Michael of Mill Valley, daughter-in-law Judy Solovieff of Vallejo, and daughter and son-in-law Connie and Rick Van Guilder of Rohnert Park.; grandchildren, Emily, Sarah, Kyle, Claire, Alice, and Alex. Mrs. Solovieff was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; her son Nicolas; and her sister Ruth and brother Delos. She was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first great-grandchild, Gabriel Nicolas Solovieff, due to be born July 1, 2014. Monte's Chapel of The Hills, San Anselmo Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
