Robert E. Spain Obituary
Robert E Spain, Ed.D. January 25, 1929 - July 23, 2013 Born in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1929, long-time Marin County educator at the Marin County Office of Education, Bob Spain, passed away in Petaluma, CA on Tuesday, July 23, 2013. After returning from service in the Army at the end of World War II, Bob attended Kansas State University where he earned both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Social and General Sciences and School Administration and Psychology. He taught elementary and middle school in Kansas and then moved to Petaluma, CA. There he was a school counselor, U.S. History teacher and Football Coach at Petaluma High School. Bob's first job in a county office of education was as the Administrative Assistant to the Sutter County Superintendent of School in Yuba City, CA. In 1963, he joined the staff at the Marin County Office of Education where he held a variety of positions including Curriculum Consultant, Coordinator of Audio-Visual Education, Director of Administrative Services, Assistant Superintendent, Associate Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent, the position from which he retired in 1990. During his 36 years at the Marin County Office of Education and even after he retired, Spain served as the Interim Superintendent in the Shoreline Unified, Tamalpais Union High School and Sausalito-Marin City School Districts. He also earned his General School Administration Credential from San Francisco State University, did Pre-doctoral studies at Stanford University and earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova University. He taught as an Instructor/ Lecturer at Sonoma State University, LaVerne University, Hofstra University, Rocky Mountain College and the University of California at Berkeley. Bob was active in the Marin County Community. He was a member of the Marin Conservation League, Marin Rod and Gun Club, Lifehouse, Phi Delta Kappa, American Red Cross, Rotary, San Rafael Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge and E Clampus Vitus. He was on the Board of the Marin Athletic Foundation and the Advisory Board of the United Way as well as serving as a Docent for the Point Reyes National Seashore. He was active on the Marin Military Affairs Committee and a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his leisure time, he enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, photography and antique furniture. Bob is survived by his daughter Dian Hunter and husband Scott; his son, Bob and his wife Sheryl; his grandchildren Celeste, Chris and Jeffrey and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandson Steven Spain.
