Stephen Craig Turpie Obituary
Stephen Craig Turpie On March 24, 2013, Stephen Craig Turpie died, leaving many friends and relatives blessed to have known him and happy to have shared their lives with him. Born in San Diego May 9, 1945, "Turp" graduated from San Diego State University, and U.C. Hastings College of the Law. After earning his law degree and passing the bar, Turp surprised everyone by going to sea as a Merchant Marine. Steve was a decorated war veteran, earning a Silver Star for valor and a Purple Heart while serving as a radioman in Vietnam. He was a founding member of the Hastings Rugby Football Club, and was an active and inspirational player from the team's first game in 1973 until its last in 2000. In 1990, he married Randy Doering and the next year they moved to Eureka, Montana, where Turp designed and built a log home on the shores of Glen Lake. Together they formed the non-profit organization "Friends of the Shelter," which has saved hundreds of animals over the past 13 years, before returning to the Bay Area in 1999, where Steve became an assistant construction manager for the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy on Crissy Field and then a project manager for the National Park Service. After retiring, he rebuilt the home he and Randy purchased in San Rafael, constructing decks and ponds, irrigation systems and aviaries for their fish and birds. Steve was a lover of nature, soccer, and the Giants. He was a world traveler with a thirst for knowledge. He loved women and women loved him. Men admired and wanted to be like him. He was funny, pithy, and exceptionally perceptive. There was no greater reward for telling a joke than Turp's cracked smile and twinkling blue eyes. Steve was diagnosed with cancer several years ago and fought it valiantly. He approached the end as he did everything in life, on his own terms. He will forever be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife Randy, by his brother Bill, nephew Brad, niece Sarah, and his aunt and uncle, Naomi and Austin Mason. In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve's honor may be made to the San Diego Zoo and Hospice by the Bay.
