MOUNT GILEAD: Richard T. Myers, age 84, of Mount Gilead, passed away Wednesday afternoon, December 11, 2013 at Riverside Methodist Hospital following a brief illness.
On June 12, 1929, Richard was born in Kipton, Ohio, the son of William and Mabel (Sell) Myers. He attended Camden Township High School where he graduated in the class of 1947. Richard went on to further his education at the Ohio State University where he obtained a Bachelors of Science in Agricultural Dairy Science and graduated in the class of 1951. After schooling Richard was talked into joining the Marine Corps where he served in the Korean War until his honorable discharge.
In 1949, Richard married the love of his life, Joan Lamoreaux, on June 26th in Elyria, Ohio. Together they have raised four children and a foster child.
Richard started working at Cedarbrook Farms for 12 years before spending a year teaching Vocational Agriculture at Northmor. After teaching, he made the move to work in finances when he started working at Production Credit Association. He worked there for 19 years until transferring to the Farm and Home Administration, USDA, where he retired after 7 years of service.
His large presence will surely be missed around town. He was a 40+ year member of Kiwanis where he served as past secretary. For 16 years, Richard served on the School Board for Mount Gilead with multiple terms as President. He also served on Tri-Rivers School Board as President. For many years Richard was big into the annual livestock sale where he served as treasurer. He has served on the board for Habitat for Humanity, was a volunteer on the EMS squad, and was a member of the Alpha Twig at the Morrow County Hospital. Richard loved to serve his church. At Trinity United Methodist Church, Richard served in many roles. He was a previous Trustee, Sunday school teacher, current chair of the Endowment and Finance Committee, huge supporter of the Community Dinner, and truly knew every nook and cranny of the church.
When Richard was not volunteering you could find him tinkering on projects. He had a passion for restoring old tractors, especially Allis-Chalmers. His van was became his "truck" and tool box so he could always be ready to tackle a project. Richard loved to do mission work and for the past decade had been going to Chatham, Illinois to the Midwest Distribution Center. Traveling is something he and Joan loved to do together and he has been to all 50 states as well as countries overseas.
Richard will be dearly missed by his wife Joan; his children: Lois (Bob) Belohlavek of Mount Gilead, Richard (Susan) Myers Jr. of Wapakoneta, OH, Mary Kay Myers of Mount Gilead, Jane (Randy) Reinhart of Hilliard, OH, and a foster son David (Charlotte) Ricks of Columbus; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; three brothers: Stanley, Alvin, Neil Myers; a sister Wilma Layport; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, infant son Daniel, and brothers Ralph and Terry Myers.
His family will greet friends on Saturday, December 14, 2013, from 1 to 4 pm at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel. 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead, OH. A service honoring Richard's life will be held Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Trinity United Methodist Church, at 2 pm, with Rev. Lori Burdette-Steele officiating. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery.
Rather than flowers, the family prefers donation be made to Trinity United Methodist Church memorial fund, or to the Midwest Mission Distribution Center and may be sent to the care of the funeral home.
