Michael Charles Stewart, 70, Pittsville died Friday, Oct. 26, 2012. Michael enjoyed hunting almost as much as fishing. He was severely injured after slipping from his deer stand.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Buchanan-Rembs Funeral Home, Pittsville. Michael's family encourages friends to join in giving remembrances during a time of sharing at 7:30 p.m.

Born Oct. 1, 1942, in Grand Rapids, WI, he was the oldest son of Charles and Katharine Stewart. They are deceased.

Michael went to Veedum Rural School through eighth grade and attended Pittsville High School before entering the U.S. Navy in 1961. He served aboard several ships including the USS Vulcan before transferring to the "Conie," the USS Constellation aircraft carrier. For his actions in saving the ship from dire damage off the coast of Vietnam, he was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation with Bronze Star.

In 1974, he began working for the state and in 1977 moved to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He was a power plant operator there until retiring in 2004.

Michael was married to Trudy Williams on Dec. 8, 1975, in Eva, Al. An earlier marriage had ended in divorce. There are four children: Lorrie Navarro of Babcock, Mike (Renee) Stewart of Pittsville, Dallas Hanvey of New Lisbon, and Jon Hanvey of Green Bay. Grandchilren are Nicole, Justin, Michael Jr., Brady, Noah and Paige. Michael's brothers are Victor Stewart of Wisconsin Rapids and Roger (Kay) Stewart of La Crosse. He also is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

An avid motorcyclist, Michael rode his Harley-Davidsons for many years before trading the last one in on a Minneapolis Moline tractor. He grew to love planting and working to enhance his home, yard and woods.

His family already misses his great spirit, geniality and loyality.
