Norman Grant Harvey
October 14, 1936 - July 16, 2012
Norman Harvey was born on October 14, 1936 in Oakland, CA. He passed away July 16, 2012 at the age of 75 in Merced, CA. Norman married Frances Carol Day on June 11, 1955 and he joined the Military that same year. Norman attended OCS from 1961-1962. His first assignment as an Officer was in Germany. Upon his return to the states he was assigned to bases in California, Montana, New Mexico to name a few. He served in Vietnam in 1969 to 1972. He joined the Inspector General's team for Nuclear Safety and traveled all over the world for the next few years inspecting Nuclear sites. He was then assigned to Castle Air Force Base where he served as the Commander of the MMS (Munitions Maintenance Squadron) until his retirement in 1975. Norman was then hired by TRW to go to Iran as support for the Imperial Iranian Air Force. When the Shah was overthrown he returned to the states and joined Ford Aerospace working as a Safety Engineer with NASA and the Space shuttle. Upon returning he opened up an antique store "Vintage Time" in Atwater in 1980. He worked as consultant with many different companies and directed his attentions to the church where he was quite active. Norman was a Formula V race car driver who drove the famous Nuremburg Track in Germany and others around Europe and the U.S. In his spare time he built his own race cars in his basement in Germany and later with the help of his best friend/brother Jack in the U.S. He attended Bob Bondurant School of Driving with actress Elke Somer and her husband. Norman was an avid collector of everything Volkswagen and worked on restoring vintage VW's in his spare time. He was an avid reader, Scholar, lover of music and musical instruments. Norman had his PhD in Safety Engineering. Norman is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Mary Elizabeth (Tiedeman) Harvey. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Frances Harvey, brother Jack Harvey (Connie) of Manteca, CA, daughters Sue Bourgeois (Tony) of Coffeyville, KS, Shari Bennett of Belleville, Illinois, and Sandi Nardini Born (Mauro) of Lake Forest, CA. Grandchildren Jennifer (Crump) Bare (Alex), Jason Grant Crump, Ashley Bennett, Kyle Bennett, Tyler Bennett, Breanna (Nardini) Dexter (Billy), Cameron Nardini, Dominic Nardini and Great Grandchild Noah James Bare. Visitation will take place Saturday July 21, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Evergreen Christian Center, 5935 N. Winton Way in Winton, CA with Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 AM. Burial with Military Honors provided by Travis Air Force Base Honor Guard will be Monday July 23rd, 2012 at 1:30 PM at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA. Arrangements are under the direction of Whitton Family Funeral Service in Merced, CA.
