Barbara Brooks Copple Obituary
Barbara Brooks Copple
Dec. 25, 1919 - Apr. 21, 2014
Resident of San Jose
Barbara Brooks Copple, loving mother and wife and 68-year resident of San Jose, died Monday April 21 at her home. Born in Loogootee, Indiana in 1919, Barbara received her B.A from Depauw University in 1941, continuing her education at the National College of Education in Evanston, Illinois. Intending to become a primary school teacher, her plans changed when she married Jack H. Copple as he was shipping out for Europe in 1943 during WWII. In 1945 they moved to San Jose to begin their new life, and raised seven children born within nine years of each other while Jack built his career as a developer, businessman, and civic leader. They were together until Jack died in 1994.
Barbara was a 75-year member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, a member of the American Association of University Women, a charter member of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and active in other charitable organizations. She had an extensive history as a volunteer from when her children were young to a few months ago. An exercise instructor at the Willow Glen Community and Senior Center for many years, she also played the piano at two long-term care facilities.
Barbara was very proud of her large family and also valued her independence. She drove herself to her hair appointment until one month before she died. Neighbors knew to look for her as she backed down the long driveway. The family wishes to thank those neighbors and the kind doctors who helped her stay healthy in her later years. Barbara loved her family, crossword puzzles, and her home of 61 years. Though she lived in California most of her life, she always considered herself a Hoosier.
Barbara is survived by her children Cynthia Copple (Santa Cruz), Alice Copple Tosic (Serbia), Jackie Copple (Menlo Park), Jim Copple (Mary Ann) (San Jose), Betsy Copple Zimmerman (John) (Colorado), Julia Copple Davenport (Steve) (Santa Cruz), 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Barbara was predeceased by husband Jack Copple, daughter Peg Copple, and great-granddaughter Scarlett Mehring.
Memorial gifts may be made to the . Funeral services will be held at Oak Hill Funeral Home, 300 Curtner Avenue, San Jose, on Friday, May 2 at 1:00 pm.
