Resident of San Carlos
Loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones, at the age of 83 on February 8, 2014.
Barbara Marie Mason was born April 26, 1930, to her parents, Henry J Gersmeier of Westfalia, Germany, and Theresa Arendes Gersmeier of San Francisco.
Barbara was the eldest of 3 girls, and was raised in San Francisco,
later moving with her family to Redwood City.
Barbara attended St. Cecilia's Elementary School, Immaculate Conception
Academy High School, and the College of San Mateo, where she completed her training as a dental nurse. She later received an AA degree from Canada College, specializing in bookkeeping and business. She worked as a dental nurse before marrying, and as a bookkeeper after her children had grown.
Barbara especially enjoyed hiking, skiing, and traveling. She had a talent for painting and photography, and a special knack for home decorating. During her later adult years, she took up clogging, as well. Barbara was active in the Catholic Church, serving in the Mass as a Eucharistic minister. She volunteered her time with St. Anthony's Padua Dining Room, which is a soup kitchen in Menlo Park, and helped with Meals on Wheels deliveries in Auburn, CA. She also donated some time to the Palomar Park volunteer fire dept.
Barbara was a member of the Cairo Club in San Carlos, and the Palomar Park Garden Club in Redwood City.
In 1957, Barbara met and married her beloved James (Jim) Richard Mason, a graduate of Stanford University, and a high school teacher and coach with the Sequoia Union High School District, with whom she shared the next 53 years. Barbara, Jim and their daughters, first lived in Belmont, CA, later settling in Redwood City where they resided for over 20 years. The couple retired to Auburn, CA, and built a lovely home on Lake Combie. Barbara and Jim returned to the Bay Area in 2005 to be closer to family, making their final residence in San Carlos, CA. Barbara was preceded in death by Jim, February, 2011.
Barbara is survived by four daughters, Theresa Esteban, Marilyn Richter, Karen Kacaba, Donna Mukerji, her younger sister, Charlotte Sullivan, 5 grandsons, and 1 granddaughter.
Barbara will be remembered and admired as a beautiful, strong, Christian woman who lived her faith and values, and she will be lovingly missed by all of us whom she inspired as a devoted mother, relative, and friend.
