Bernard Joseph Axelrad, 87, passed peacefully Dec. 5, 2012, from multiple myeloma. He was preceded in death by his wife Lee (Perlstein) of 47 years. His wife of 14 years, Sally Ravel, was by his side. Born Aug. 31, 1925 in Salt Lake City Utah. Spent 2 years as infantry lieutenant in Korea in WWII, returning to Univ. of Utah to earn MD in internal medicine. There he met Lee; married in1949 and moved to San Francisco. After residencies at Mt. Zion and Stanford hospitals, moved to San Jose 1954 and estab'd private medical practice of 36 yrs. Retired in 1990, having time to focus on painting; became an award-winning member of the local art community.
A "renaissance man," Bernie enjoyed cycling, golf and skiing - including early ski patrol days at Alta and trips to Tahoe, Colorado and Europe. He loved good food, wine, traveling and friends. Served as Baille of Cha#238;ne des R#244;tisseurs; was an accomplished chef, gardener, woodworker, bridge player and jack-of-all-trades who "could fix anything," per his grandsons. Lifetime member of Emanu-El. He is survived by his wife Sally Ravel; daughters Claire and Merle Axelrad; grandsons Noah Berenberg and Marshall Serlin and step-children Teri (Berry) Kane, Stacey (Josh) Abarbanel, David Ravel and grand-children Emily, Alex, Charlie, Chloe and Aliza. A celebration of his life will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday January 6 at Saratoga Retirement Center.
