Carl William Ketchum Obituary
Carl William Ketchum
Oct. 27, 1924 - Jan. 27, 2014
Resident of San Jose
Carl William Ketchum passed away peacefully Monday January 27, 2014. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always had a smile and a good word for everyone he met. His life was devoted to service, which blessed both him and those he supported.
Carl was born in Lansing, Michigan to George Ketchum and Helen Evans. Much of his youth was spent in Battle Creek, Michigan, where his love of sports began. His family moved to San Jose, CA in his early years. They later relocated to Alameda, CA during his high school years where he played baseball and basketball (on the Episcopal church team). He served in the Army Air Corps, after which he returned to San Jose and attended San Jose State College. He graduated with a degree in business and was president of Alpha Phi Omega, the service fraternity. He married Erna Carolyn (Carol) Hafley on July 9, 1950 and they lived in San Jose. They had two children, Stan and Sharon. He was a devoted father and participated in Boy Scouts, Y Indian Guides and many other school and church programs with his children. He was also a major cheerleader for his grandchildren's activities and interests. He loved playing tennis and golf. The majority of Carl's career was as a buyer at IBM. He retired in 1984 and began his '2nd career' as a volunteer with Hospice of the Valley, where he joyously served for 25 years. His love of music and church was life long. Carl and Carol were founding members of St. Edward's Episcopal Church, San Jose and they both shared their musical talents there for decades. Though a violinist in his early days, he became a fiddler and mandolin player later on and entertained audiences for many years as part of a local bluegrass band, The Last Train Home. He loved making music and sharing it with others. He and his family were devoted members of the Santa Clara County Cursillo Community.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Erna (Carol), devoted children Stan Ketchum (and his wife Sandra) of San Jose and Sharon (Ketchum) Lee (and her husband Bill Joos) of Cupertino, and grandchildren Sean Ketchum of San Jose, Elise (Lee) Costa of Apple Valley, CA, Caryn Lee of Santa Clara, Sandy Ketchum and Shawn Ketchum of San Jose. His kind, generous and uplifting spirit will live on in all who knew him.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Carl's Life on Saturday February 15, 2014 at 2pm at Good Samaritan Episcopal Church (formerly St. Edward's Episcopal Church) 15040 Union Avenue, San Jose. The family would appreciate donations to Hospice of the Valley or Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in honor of Carl.
