Dale Perry Masher, 84, died at his home in Los Altos, CA, under Pathways Hospice care with his wife by his side, on March 30, 2014, after a long battle with prostate cancer and chronic pain. He was born on April 14, 1929, in Bedford, Indiana, to Elmer George and Ola (Ahl) Masher.
Dale graduated magna cum laude with an A.B. in engineering science and applied physics from Harvard College in 1951 and an S.M. in electrical engineering from MIT in 1953. He was a technical staff member doing research at Bell Telephone Labs after graduation until he was drafted in 1955. He served two years as a project engineer with the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Fort Monmouth, NJ. After his discharge as a PFC he was a research engineer at Stanford Research Institute, now SRI International, in Menlo Park, CA, for 34 years.
Dale had patents on a carrier-suppressed modulator, ionospheric data display, desk calculator display, digital vehicle detector, microprocessor-based tape recording, and a switching power-supply control scheme. He was a member of IEEE, Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Society) and Phi Beta Kappa.
Dale loved working on his cars with his children, making or fixing things at his workbench, ball room and square dancing, traveling for fun, and flying. Dale got his private pilot license in 1957 and took both sons flying inspiring them to get their pilot licenses. He lived in Los Altos for 57 years and until his illness was active at Immanuel Lutheran, joining in 1957 three years after the founding of the church.
Preceded in death by his parents and daughter Krista Henley, he is survived by his wife Mary Ann "Penny" Robertson, his brother Wallace K. Masher of Bedford, IN, three children, Kerry Masher (LaVada) of Wichita, KS, Laury Olson of Concord, CA, and Duane Masher of Stateline, NV, seven grandchildren, and four great-granddaughters, and he was "Grandpa Dale" to Penny's two grandkids.
A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Tuesday, April 22, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1715 Grant Rd, Los Altos, CA 94024. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or to Pathways Hospice, Sunnyvale, CA.
