David Michael Jones, passed away on September 2, 2013 in Monterey, California, at the age of 66. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska on February 12, 1947, the son of David P. Jones and Ramona (Jackson) Jones. David grew up in Ankeny, Iowa where he graduated from Ankeny High School. He later went on to graduate from Iowa State University with a degree in electrical engineering.
He worked for a short time following college before he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving for eight years during the Viet Nam War. Following his military service David settled in California where he had a long career in the computer electronics industry, working for I.B.M, Quantum and LSI. He retired in 2005. A long time resident of California, he resided in Gilroy and Palo Alto before moving to North Carolina in 2007 when he began sharing time between North Carolina and Santa Cruz to be near his beloved ocean.
David was an avid and accomplished sailor, having won many competitions on his boat "Cookie Monster". He also enjoyed Kayaking, Scuba Diving, Surfing, Tennis and Skiing. He was a skilled craftsman, who made furniture of the highest quality. David loved many outdoor activities but his greatest love was the water, his wife and his children.
He was a member of the Santa Cruz Yacht Club, Seascape Tennis Club and the Pinehurst County Club.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Diane Jones of North Carolina and Santa Cruz; daughter, Jennifer Mitchell of Campbell, CA; son, David Jones of Fremont, CA; mother, Ramona Allen of Lake Placid, FL; sister, Edith Patterson of St. Paul, MN; half brother, Jay Redman of Lake Placid, FL and half sister, Patty Ulrich of Austin, TX.
Services will be held at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz, CA. on Friday September 6, 2013 at 4:00 pm. A visitation will take place at Pacific Gardens Chapel on Friday from 2pm until service time.
In lieu of flowers contributions are preferred to Habitat for Humanity.
