Dorothy McWhorter Murdoch Obituary
Dorothy McWhorter Murdoch
April 19, 1927 - February 23, 2013
Resident of San Mateo, CA
Dorothy (Dori) McWhorter Murdoch, dear wife of Alexander (Lex) Murdoch, age 85, died February 23, 2013 in San Mateo, California. Her quick wit and ready smile will be heartily remembered by those who knew and loved her. Losing her mother at age three, and father at age 12, a self-made, independent, strong woman, she overcame many challenges and always found a way to stride positively onward.
She was born in Chicago, Illinois April 19, 1927 to Mary Louise (Etten) McWhorter and Golder Lewis McWhorter MD. She attended Morgan Park High School in Chicago and finished her studies at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. As a child, she enjoyed ice skating, ballet and playing the piano. She always knew she wanted to be a nurse, having observed medicine first hand as her father took her on rounds at the hospital and observed him from the waiting room in their home as he saw patients. After college, seeking adventure and a career, she and a nursing school chum traveled to California.
In Los Angeles, she met and married Nelson J Mossburg Jr with whom she had three children, Nancy E Wagner Foster, Jody L Wagner Coale and James L Wagner. Dori worked as a nurse in Los Angeles, Bakersfield and Palo Alto - culminating her nursing career at Stanford Hospital. A second career followed as a real estate agent in the Bay Area.
Marrying in 1987, she found true love and happiness with Lex Murdoch. They shared their many wonderful years together entertaining, traveling, playing bridge and tennis, reading, enjoying local social events, gardening and fashion modeling. She is survived by her husband, her brother Robert C McWhorter of Dallas, TX, her children, and grandchildren, Logan Steele Coale and Ashley Etten Coale. Her other two brothers Henry E McWhorter MD and John T McWhorter pre-deceased her. Service will be private. Remembrances to Mission Hospice, San Mateo.
