Francis G. Battaglia was born on March 25, 1919 to Salvadore Battaglia and Julia Devincenzi Battaglia. As a lifelong resident of San Jose, Frank attended and graduated from St. Leo's Elementary, Bellarmine and Santa Clara University. He was the first batboy for the San Jose Bees in the early 1920's and went on to play baseball through school, college and later played semi-pro.
Frank served in the U.S. Army 54th Signal Battalion during WWII. Upon his return, he continued to play semi-pro ball while working in the sporting goods dept of The Emporium in San Francisco. He later became a sales rep for Arabol Mfg Co./Borden Chemical Co., from which he retired. While living in a boarding house in SF as a sworn bachelor, he met the late Joan Ellen Lyhene, an Irish girl from Nebraska, who would be his wife for 45 years.
Frank is survived by 4 children, Catherine Shaw, Michael, John & Nancy Battaglia, 3 grandchildren, Cassandra & Kristopher Shaw and Giovanna Battaglia, and 4 great grandchildren, Logan, Grant, Wilson and Kennedy Shaw.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Vigil Service Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at LIMA-CAMPAGNA-ALAMEDA MISSION CHAPEL, 600 S. Second St, San Jose, with Viewing beginning at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass Friday, May 3, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Leo's Church, 88 Race St, San Jose. Donations may be made to Martha's Kitchen or Paralyzed Veterans of America.
