Jim passed away peacefully at home during the early morning hours Saturday Feb 1. He is once again with his beloved wife Sylvia. Jim and Sylvia were married for 35 years at the time of her passing in April of 1999. Jim never remarried.
Jim was born in Wichita Falls, TX where he was raised by his parents John and Agatha. He was the youngest of 5 children. Upon graduation from Galena Park High School in Houston, TX. Jim served 5 years in the United States Marine Corp. After leaving the Corp Jim pursued his passion for Theater earning a BA from Adams State College in Alamosa, CO. and a MA from The University of Denver. It was there, he met and fell in love with Sylvia.
Jim then set off on a 30 plus year teaching career that took him from The University of Denver to Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA and finally to West Valley College where he retired as the Director of the Theater Department. During his life Jim touched and inspired the lives of countless students. He was a friend of Bill W and actively involved with the Alano club of San Jose. He was an incredibly talented sculptor, painter and was passionate about his basset hounds.
Jim is survived by his loving son, Callan, daughter-in-law Laurie and grandchildren, Nolan and Cameron (CJ) Smith.
Friends and family are invited to the memorial services on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 from 3 to 4 p.m. at The Los Gatos Memorial Park, 2255 Los Gatos Almaden Rd in San Jose. In Leiu of flowers, donations can be made to The Humane Society of Silicon Valley.
