James Stephen McKarns 1938 - 2012 Resident of Los Altos James Stephen McKarns, 74, of Los Altos, CA and formerly of West Unity, OH, died Friday morning, Nov. 9, 2012 due to complications from Parkinson's Disease. Born June 25, 1938 at Bryan, Williams County, OH, he was the son on Florence Bernice (Werder) and James Russell 'Stubby' McKarns. His early years were spent on his family's Fairview Farm on County Road M northeast of West Unity. A graduate of Hilltop High School, he earned his Biomedical Engineering Degree from Ohio State University in 1961 before receiving top honors at Harvard University while completing his S.M. in Engineering Degree in 1963. He retired from Lockheed Martin in 1994 after a career in the Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics and Environmental Control fields for such companies as Convair Aerospace, Bethlehem Steel and Pacific Gas and Electric Company. A 1934 Ford Tudor V-8 purchased for $15 was the first of 47 vehicles owned by this award winning automobile journalist. He had a very strong interest in automobiles and believed "the older, the better" as demonstrated by his 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. A member of countless regional, national and international automobile clubs, he was also a proud member of Mensa International. Surviving are two nephews, Geoffrey Thomas (and wife Jaclyn) of Mundelein, IL and Greggrey Russell (Angie) of Rockford, IL; two grand-nieces, Gabrielle Marie McKarns of Mundelein, IL and Everly Betty McKarns of Rockford, IL; a grand-nephew, Alois Russell McKarns of Rockford, IL. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by a brother, John Russell McKarns; a sister-in-law, Susan Banks McKarns. A private service will be held in Sheffler Cemetery, Bryan, OH at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Institute, Sunnyvale, CA.
