Feb. 25, 1940 - Sept. 6, 2013
Resident of San Jose
Lawrence 'Crazy Portuge' Tells peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his kids, Sissy, Shawdow, and Smokey "Big Boy" Tells, and family. He was born in San Jose California to Clarence and Mae Tells on February 25, 1940. Clarence signed Lawrence into the US Navy at the age of 15, and due to his 6'6" height, his age was not questioned. He served 6 tours of duty with Seal Team 2 in Vietnam.
He was a man of many talents, music was his passion in life. He was a talented song writer, drummer, singer, and producer.
He worked as a California State Building Inspector for over twenty years and was very committed to overseeing the safe construction of schools for our children.
Larry loved his Harleys and his Appaloosa horse named Budweiser, and the many rescue dogs and cats and wildlife that he helped over the years. When he came back to San Jose after living in various parts of the state he started taking in Wolf Hybrids that were mistreated and about to be put down, so he could give them a safe and loving home.
Lawrence had three children, Cheryl, Michael and Ronald. He is survived by Cheryl and Michael, and his grandson Bobby.
Lawrence was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. He is also survived by Ian & Sarah King and family of San Diego, Chad & Carrie Cheatham and family of Los Angeles, Wayne Johns & family of Hollister, and Dalan Rosas & family of Santa Cruz.
Celebration of Life will be at Grunnagle's Chapel at 1 pm this Friday the 13th, 870 Benito St., Hollister CA 95023.
