Mary Margaret 'Curly' Neal

Mary Margaret "Curly" Neal died on June 10, 2013 at the Vi Assisted Living Facility in Palo Alto, California. She was 88 years old.
Curly was born on July 15, 1924 in Miami, Oklahoma to Charles A. and Vena M. Neal. She graduated from Miami High School in 1942, Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1944 and Northwestern University with a BS in Chemistry in 1946.
She worked as a chemist for Baxter Laboratories, Great Lakes Carbon Company and Shell Development Company before returning to Northwestern University to obtain a Masters Degree in Physical Education in 1955. She worked as a tennis coach and PE instructor at San Jose State until 1964 when she moved to teach at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. There she was coach of the Women's tennis team and Dean of Women's Physical Education until her retirement in 1985. She lived in Palo Alto until her death.
Her parents and brother preceded her in death. She is survived by three nieces and one nephew and their children: Mary Neal (husband Bob Charity and daughter Maggie Charity) in University City, Missouri; Elizabeth Edwards (daughters Lauren and Claire) in Argyle, Texas; Jane Neal in Miami, Oklahoma; and Chuck Neal (wife Ann, daughter Kelsey and sons Spencer and Sam) in Miami, Oklahoma.
Curly loved tennis, sports, travel, reading, muffins, jokes, bicycling, walking and people. Always cheerful and warm, she touched many lives with her friendship and smiles. Ever elegant and gracious she will be missed and remembered.
Services are pending. She will be buried with her parents and brother in Miami, Oklahoma.
