Michael Harder
July 11, 1947 - April 11, 2014
Maui, Hawaii
Michael Keith Harder passed away in Medewi, Bali, Indonesia, his "Heaven on Earth", April 11, 2014, after complications resulting from pneumonia. Mike was born July 11, 1947, to Ed and Bette Harder in Burlingame, California. He attended Our Lady of Angel's grade school, Serra High School, then on to Oregon State University in 1965. In 1967, Mike joined the US Marine Corp and served three tours in Viet Nam. He went on to study education at Chico State and earned his BA in Economics at theUniversity of San Francisco.
Mike's passions in life were cooking, owning a restaurant in Sun Valley, Idaho, for 10 years, scuba diving and surfing around the world, which eventually drew him to Maui, where he made his home. A trip to Bali is where he stumbled upon his ultimate passion: HELPING OTHERS. Known as "Mr. Mike" or "PA", he became totally immersed in Medewi's orphanages, raising money from his many friends around the world to buy rice for the villagers; he helped build kitchens and put roofs on their homes, as well as treating the handicapped and elderly. Bali became his heaven on earth where he was "Living the Dream".
Mike is survived by brothers Bob, Scott, Brian, sister, Kathy Phillips and many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends all around the world. Mike will be missed by all that were fortunate enough to cross his path.
If you would like to continue Mike's legacy, please send contributions to: Mike's Legacy, c/o W. Scott Harder, PO Box 2405, Ketchum, ID 83340. Contributions will be collected and wired to a fund in Bali begun by Mike.
