Paul C. Goddard M.D. Obituary
Paul C. Goddard, M.D.
Feb. 27, 1917 - May 2, 2014
Resident of San Jose
Dr. Paul Goddard passed away May 2, 2014 at the age of 97 after suffering a stroke days earlier. Three of his sons were with him during his final days.
In 1947, a young woman was hospitalized with a very badly broken leg from an auto accident; her name was Barbara and Paul was her orthopedic surgeon. In January of this year they celebrated a deep, everlasting love and their 66th wedding anniversary.
Paul had a remarkable life. He worked his way through college and medical school panning for gold with his father in the Feather River region of northern California, cashing in their findings at the San Francisco mint. He also worked at Yosemite Park's Ahwanhee Hotel, first as a busboy and later as a wine steward, and met Walt Disney and Ansel Adams: Mr. Disney was always friendly and would inquire as to how medical school was progressing.
For all the years his sons lived at home, Paul would take the whole family snow skiing each winter and to Lake Tahoe each summer for water skiing, fishing, work on the cabin, having a good time. Throughout all the years one thing never changed: Paul and Barbara greatly enjoyed being at their cabin, just being together.
Paul would play in pickup football and basketball games with his sons and the neighborhood kids and watched sports of all sorts. He designed and built a large addition to their cabin while on vacations and always had notepads of drawings for one project or another.
Paul served in the Army in WWII and was in charge of a prison hospital in Italy. When he began his medical practice in Santa Clara Valley in 1948 there were only three or four orthopedists serving this area and a region beyond Hollister. He finally retired at the age of 81, some 50 years later.
He is missed by all of us but especially so by Barbara.
