Philip H. Rupel|
1/11/33 - 7/29/14
Philip "Phil" Rupel, 81, passed into eternal rest on July 29, 2014, following a long battle with COPD. He was born January 11, 1933 in Andrews, Indiana to Hildra and Hazel Rupel.
Entering the Navy at 17, Phil served during the Korean War on the USS Cabot. Following his tour of duty Phil entered the University of Florida, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He followed college with a tour in the US Army which he completed in 1961 while serving at Fort Huachuca. Upon his honorable discharge from the US Army he answered JFK's question of "What can you do for your country?" by joining and serving in the Peace Corps in Pakistan where he taught mathematics to university students. While in the Peace Corps he met and married Patricia Browne.
Returning to the U.S. Phil raised a family of three sons, the first born in NYC, the second in Arizona and then the family moved permanently to Santa Clara where his third son was born. He worked for Lockheed Corp for many years with the last 15 contracted out to NASA at Ames Research Center, Moffet Field. During this time with NASA Phil met and married his second wife, Kathy Ross.
Phil had many talents and interests throughout his life and enjoyed sharing his interests with friends and family. SCUBA diving was a main focus for over 40 years as Phil developed into a SCUBA instructor and underwater photographer. He shared his passion by teaching others to SCUBA dive as a NAUI instructor.
Besides SCUBA diving he enjoyed free diving for Abalone and wind surfing. His son's inherited their father's love for the water. He was a lifetime learner taking classes at community colleges and online.
After retiring from Lockheed, Phil volunteered as a tutor in San Mateo Adult High School and later with the DSPS and Math Departments at College of San Mateo. His students also became his friends with many of them maintaining friendships beyond their graduation. Other activities he enjoyed were Toastmasters and transcendental meditation.
Most of all, Phil loved his family. His pride in the success of his children and grandchildren was beyond words. His heart was large and generous; giving of himself to others whenever he thought it would help someone succeed.
Phil is predeceased by his parents, Hildra and Hazel Rupel and his brother Alvin Rupel. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Ross, his beloved sons Bartholomew (Brenda), William, and Timothy (Rachel); his grandchildren Matthew, Samantha, Katie, Ella and his nieces Vickie, Sunny, Judy and Lisa.
