Resident of Burlingame, CA
DARLING, Richard J., M.D. - Died on November 18, 2013 at age 70, at his home in Burlingame surrounded by loved ones.
Dr. Darling was a pillar of the San Mateo County medical community. He practiced cardiology and internal medicine at Peninsula and Mills Hospitals for almost 40 years. With his partners, he operated the Burlingame Pacifica Medical Group, one of the largest private internal medicine practices on the peninsula. He practiced with a passion and devotion to his patients that was reminiscent of a by-gone era of medicine. He cherished the 20 and 30-year relationships he had with many of his patients, acting as a confidant and counselor to many.
Dr. Darling was born in Pittsburgh, PA on January 4, 1943 to Alvin and Ida (Bernstein) Darling. The family moved to Detroit, MI and in 1956 to Teaneck, NJ, where he graduated from Teaneck High School. He attended the University of Vermont, where he met his wife of 47 years, Helaine "Cookie" Goldman, and graduated in 1965. The couple lived in Switzerland from 1966 to 1971 where he trained at the Université of Lausenne Medical School. They moved back to New York, where Dr. Darling was an intern and resident at the New York University Medical Center. They later moved to San Francisco in 1974 where he trained as fellow in cardiology at Mt. Zion hospital.
Dr. Darling was a long time member of the San Francisco Concordia-Argonaut Club, where he could be found every Wednesday night for more than 30 years playing bridge and smoking cigars with some of his best friends. His hobbies included skiing and playing racquetball and he loved spending time in Tahoe with friends and family. He was also a long time member and supporter of Peninsula Temple Shalom in Burlingame.
A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his wife Helaine, his sons (and their wives) Scott (Amy) and Craig (Tawny), his grandchildren Asher, Elise, Nate and Julia, his sister Vicki Boslow and his nephews Jason and Stuart Boslow of Plano, TX.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, November 21st at 12:30pm at Peninsula Temple Shalom, 1655 Sebastian Dr., Burlingame. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Jewish Home of San Francisco, 302 Silver Ave., SF, CA 94112.
