Resident of Cupertino
Roy W. Roberts, Jr., 85, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2013 in Cupertino, California. Roy was born February 2, 1928 to Dr. Roy W. and Edgar Lyday (Purifoy) Roberts in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the youngest of two children. A member of Sigma Chi and Pi Mu Epsilon, Roy graduated from University of Arkansas in 1952 and received his Master of Science from Northeastern University in 1955.
Roy served in the Army and Air Force (1st Lieutenant) from 1946-1952. During that time he met his beautiful bride, Catherine (Kay) Joyce Yocum, and they married in 1953 in Belmont, Massachusetts.
In 1950 Roy began a long career in electrical engineering, semiconductors, and other technologies that laid the foundation for today's digital world. In 1959 he relocated to the Santa Clara Valley in California where he was active in technology until his retirement in 1992. Roy cherished the many colleagues and lifelong friends he met during that time. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Tau Beta Pi professional associations.
Roy was an intrepid traveler and together he and Kay visited more than forty countries. He had an avid interest in history and place, and volunteered many hours with the Cupertino Historical Society.
Roy is survived by his loving wife Kay; daughters Leslie Roberts, Camille Roberts Kline, and Anne Roberts; and sister Caroline Kinney. Roy was preceded in death by his parents.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at Foothill Covenant Church, 1555 Oak Ave., Los Altos, CA 94024., followed by a reception. The family welcomes friends to join this service in loving remembrance of Roy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cupertino Historical Society, 10185 N. Stelling Road, Cupertino, CA 95014 or the YWCA of Silicon Valley Domestic Violence Support Network.
