Selby V. I. Brown Jr., retired private attorney and former Santa Clara County Counsel, passed away on Sunday June 22nd, 2014, at the age of 85. For the last seven years, Selby had been a resident of La Quinta, California. Prior to living in Southern California, Selby resided for forty years in Saratoga, California, a residential community within the San Francisco Bay Area.
Selby received his high school education at Northwestern Military and Naval Academy (Linn, WI) near the city of Lake Geneva, his undergraduate degree at Ripon College (Ripon, WI), and his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from Cornell University Law School (Ithaca, NY). He was a member of Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Phi, and Omega Sigma Chi fraternities, as well as a member of the Saratoga Rotary Club and the United States Power Squadron.
Born on July 18, 1928, in Milwaukee, WI, Selby was an only child. Described as "lively" by one of his teachers, he was responsible for overturning his kindergarten fish tank and sliding down school banisters against School Master wishes. In his later years, Selby personified this same kindred spirit much to the enjoyment of his family.
During the Korean War, Selby was a 'Gung-Ho' certified physical education instructor with the US Army at Fort Riley, KS. Later he was transferred to Japan where he became an administrator for the Japan Central Exchange. During his time in Japan, Selby met Betty Shaffer, whom he courted and later married in Yokohama at Christ Church-on-the-Bluff in August 1952.
After returning from Japan, Selby settled in California where he passed the California State Bar in November 1956. Shortly thereafter, he became Deputy Legislative Counsel of California in Sacramento and later accepted employment with the County of Santa Clara where he finished a long career of public service in 1982. During a span of nearly thirty years, Selby served the County of Santa Clara as Deputy County Counsel, Assistant County Counsel, Chief Assistant County Counsel, and finally County Counsel. He entered into private practice with a prestigious San Jose law firm in 1982, finally retiring from law in 1991.
Selby was the consummate family man and loved sailing, he later became an instructor teaching courses for the United States Power Squadron.
Selby is survived by his daughter, Kelly, son-in-law Daniel and granddaughter, Alexandra of La Quinta, CA; and son Selby III and his partner Thomas of San Diego, CA. Selby will be remembered by his family as The Master of Morse Code, a magician, a pirate king, and expert creator silly puns.
Selby will be interred at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto, CA on his birthday, Friday, July 18, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. Donations can be made in Selby Jr.'s name to the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Palo Alto, at http://www.stanfordchildrens.org
