William Earl Johns (Earl), 91, died May 2, 2013 at his home. He was born in Kennewick, WA, the first son of William Elias and Emma Linn Johns. Earl married Grace Viola Jackson of Sunnyside, WA on February 18, 1945, to whom he was devoted for 68 years.
Earl is survived by Grace and their six sons: Bill, Rich, Steve (Jody), Dan (Stacey), Tom (Lori), and Ben (Veronica); sister Clara Simmons; 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Earl was preceded in death by his brothers David and Ronald and sister Helen Clary.
Earl served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, flying 68 combat missions including two on D-Day. During a 30-year career in the Air Force, he earned the rank of Lt. Colonel, the Command Pilot Rating, and served as a reconnaissance pilot and operations officer during the Vietnam War.
Faith played the most significant role in Earl's life, guiding his decisions, giving him the great desire to love and to serve, and sustaining his courage.
A memorial service will be held at West Valley Presbyterian Church, Cupertino, on May 9 at 11:00 a.m. Donations can be made to the church, or Hospice of the Valley, San Jose.
