William Mussone II Obituary
William Mussone, II
August 19, 1947 ~ March 10, 2014
Resident of Saratoga
Dr. William James Mussone of Saratoga, California, passed away on March 10th after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Sheila and his two sons: Christopher William of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and David Gregory of Coos Bay, Oregon. He was also a proud and devoted grandfather of four: Alexander, Kristin, Leila and Nina. He greatly enjoyed following the interests and pursuits of his grandchildren and they will miss him deeply.
Bill was the only child of the late William and Rena Mussone. Born August 19, 1947 in West Orange, New Jersey, he attended high school at Seton Hall Preparatory and completed his undergraduate degree at Holy Cross College in Massachusetts. He attended dental school at the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, then proudly served in the Navy Dental Corps until 1975, when he returned to school to complete his certificate of Endodontics at the University of Minnesota Dental School. His years in San Diego had fostered a yearning for the mild California climate, and he made Saratoga his home in 1977.
Bill was an outgoing and intellectually curious man with extensive interests and talents. Truly well-rounded, he was a highly regarded member of the dental community as well as an enthusiast of the arts, sports, travel, literature, food and wine, golf, and not least of all, his dogs including his most recent and loving canine companion, Lola. He and Sheila traveled extensively and while he had a special fondness for Hawaii and Europe, he also enjoyed trips to far-reaching locales such as Russia and Hong Kong.
A familiar face to many, particularly in downtown Saratoga, Los Gatos, Milpitas, and Carmel, Bill loved dining and socializing. Always prepared for intellectual conversation and a good debate, he was known to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger, who by the end of the discourse would more often than not have become a new friend. Bill will perhaps be remembered most for his huge heart, unending generosity, and unstoppable zest for life.
Bill never allowed his diagnosis to slow or define him, and he never stopped planning his next adventure.
The Mussone family is very grateful to the dedicated doctors, nurses and staff at Stanford Cancer Center for all their efforts and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Bill's memory to Stanford University for Cancer Research. Indicate "in memory of William Mussone-for the George Fisher Research Fund" in a separate note. Send to: Development Services, PO Box 20466, Stanford, CA 94309. Donations can also be made on line at http://medicalgiving.stanford.edu Please request "other" and list the George Fisher Research Fund "in memory of William Mussone" in the instruction box. The family will be notified of your gift.
A viewing will be held at the Alameda Family Mortuary on Wednesday March 19th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Services will be held at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church in Saratoga at 10:30 am on Thursday March 20th, followed immediately by graveside service at Madronia Cemetery.
