Lucien L. Mass Obituary
Lucien Louis Mass, 89, a resident of Bellingham, died January 15, 2014. Born in Woonsocket, the son of Lionel and Marcelle (Michem) Mass, Lucien was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Annette, and his brothers, Robert and Ernest. His son Lenard died in 1977; his other six children are: Michelle (Louisiana), Rochelle (RI), Lionel ("Pete," MA), Leda (MA), Doris (NJ), and Rene (Daigneault, MA). Pre-deceased by one grandson, Michael, he is also survived by nine other grandchildren, Christine, Christopher, Danielle, Molly, Nicole, Rebecca, Sarah, Serina, and Stephen. Lucien served in the 90th Infantry Division in World War II. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded 5 battle stars. He considered his years in the service to be the most important time in his life, and participated regularly in reunions, as well as eagerly watching documentaries and films about the war, and telling stories about his experiences. A first-class weaver, Lucien attended Rhode Island School of Design for loom repair before becoming the owner of Mass-see, a wholesale bakery on Privilege Street in Woonsocket, for 17 years. In 1967 he become the owner of El-Gee Products in Bellingham, a wholesale supplier for bars and restaurants, until his retirement in 1992. An enthusiastic fisherman and craps player throughout his life, and an avid cribbage player at the Bellingham Senior Citizen Center and the Franklin Senior Citizen Center in his later years, Lucien took enormous pride in his French heritage and his ability to speak both the Parisian French of his mother's side and the Canadian French of his father's. The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 18th, at 9:00AM from CARTIER'S FUNERAL HOME, 151 So. Main St. (Rte 126), Bellingham, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM at St. Blaise Church, 1158 So. Main St., Bellingham. Interment will follow at St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home are on Friday, January 17th from 5 to 8PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Lucien's name has been added to the memorial fund at Louisiana State University's Women's and Gender Studies program named in honor of Annette Mass and her sister, Beatrice. The fund supports an award to honor the achievements of students who go to college later in life.
