Charles Allen
January 18, 1926 - July 15, 2014
Charles D. Allen (Chuck), 88, long-time Modesto resident died peacefully on July 15, 2014, at Stratford at Beyer Park in Modesto. He is loved, missed, and survived by his two daughters, Stephanie Allen and Noel Pfeffinger (Lan), and his grandchildren Kevin, Alana, and Nolan Pfeffinger.
Chuck was born in Minneapolis January 18, 1926, to Edgar M. and Gertrude H. Allen, and raised in Brentwood, CA. He fought in World War ll, was awarded a Purple Heart, and over the years attended reunions of his infantry unit. He was active in Alcoholics Anonymous, both locally and statewide, and served on several volunteer community service boards including the Parole Advisory Board. In addition he was a member of Elks and Rotary. He took his responsibility of service seriously and gave generously of time and energy.
For many years, Chuck was the manager of the feed mill at J S West Milling Co. and enjoyed all that it entailed, including solving problems and most of all working with people.
In addition to his siblings Edgar, Barbara, and Arthur who predeceased him, Chuck was raised with King, his German Shepherd, after which was named a dog park in Brentwood. To the end, Chuck enthusiastically told the story of King to visitors and caregivers.
Majoring in journalism to follow in the footsteps of his father who owned the Brentwood News, Chuck attended both Modesto Junior College and San Jose State. He was a life-long learner and voracious reader. Athletics also were very important to him from childhood, both as a participant, mainly of golf and tennis as an adult, and as a fan. Until his last days, he was watching tennis tournaments and the Giants on television. And over the years, when talking with both friends and strangers, he often expressed true pride in his family.
A service will be held August 26, 1:30 PM, at Wellspring Church (address below). In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Community Hospice (4368 Spyres Way, Modesto 95356) or Wellspring Church (820 H St, Modesto 95354). The family wishes to express their gratitude for the exceptional kindness shown by the staff at Stratford and Right at Home, and to the congregation at Wellspring, his beloved spiritual home for the last part of his life.
