John Padmos Jr.
September 21, 1943 - April 5, 2014
John Padmos Jr., 70, of Modesto passed away Saturday at Bethany Manor. John was born in Paterson, New Jersey, the only child of John and Radie Padmos. He attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, graduating in 1965. It was in Grand Rapids that John met his wife of 48 years, Barbara Vander Wall of Modesto. Together they moved to New Jersey where John attended dental school at Fairleigh Dickinson. After graduating from dental school in 1969, John joined the Air Force as a dentist and he and Barbara moved to California. He served as a dentist in Vietnam and returned to start his own practice in Modesto. His practice grew to include a dedicated staff and many valued patients. John sold his practice and retired in 2007. John was an active member of Modesto Christian Reformed Church. He served on the boards of Ripon Christian Schools, Bethany Christian Services and Stanislaus Dental Society. He and Barbara moved and restored a historic Craftsman style home from downtown Modesto. Gardening, collecting antiques, sailing, skiing, traveling, and entertaining were some of his favorite things to do. In recent years, John suffered from dementia. His health declined keeping him from enjoying his passions into retirement. When it was necessary to move from his home John was well cared for by all the attentive staff at Bethany Memory Care Unit and the skilled nursing facility. John is survived by his wife Barbara; three children Peri den Dulk (Kevin), Grant Padmos (Wendy) and Kara Johnston (Hugh); and grandchildren Olivia, Ethan, Ellie, and Abel den Dulk, Anneke and Arie Padmos, and Gerrit, Henry, and Anna Johnston.
