Carmel - Dorothy Dodge, a 28 year resident of Carmel, passed away after a short illness. Born in Susanville, California to Keith Allen and LaVerde Adams Dodge, she was a 1949 graduate of Lassen Union High School. Dorothy graduated in 1953 from Stanford University where she majored in journalism. During her four years at Stanford, she worked on the Stanford Daily and, in her senior year, she was elected the first woman editor of the Daily outside of wartime.
Dorothy then went to New York City, receiving her Master's Degree in political science from Columbia University in 1955. Having been editor of her junior high, high school and college papers, she decided she wanted nothing as much as to return to California to work for a newspaper.Ê
Dorothy worked for the Marysville-Yuba City Appeal Democrat for 30 years, first as a reporter, next as a copy editor and then became the city editor. She was active in the Associated Press News Executives Council, receiving their California President's Award, again one of the first women to be so honored. In 1985, she joined the staff of the Monterey Peninsula Herald, where she worked until her retirement in 1997.
Dorothy lived at Del Mesa Carmel where she was active on the library committee and belonged to the computer club. She was a member of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church and, at one time, served on the vestry.
Dorothy is survived by many lifelong friends including her Stanford Daily friends and Pat Griffith. For the excellent care Dorothy received, thanks are given to her massage therapists, Richard and Jan Cohen, Eric Willson, Jennifer Campbell, Pilar Segonia and the Del Mesa staff and special thanks to Dorothy's friend, Sole Willrodt, and Drs. Elliot Light and Michael Galloway. Ê
Services will be held at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church on Thursday, March 7 at 1:00 PM followed by committal in the church's columbarium. Memorial donations are suggested to St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 28005 Carmel Valley Rd., Carmel, CA 93923 or the
, 21 Lower Ragsdale, Monterey, CA 93940. Please visit www.thepaulmortuary.com to sign Dorothy's guest book.
