DEL REY OAKS, CA - Hilo Campos, 84, passed away at Del Monte Assisted Living in Pacific Grove on Wednesday, March 7, 2013 with his daughter, Jodie at his side. Hilo was well known and loved on the Monterey Peninsula. ÊHe attended Bayview School and Monterey High School, and was a member of the California National Guard, 149th Tank Battalion for 16 years. He retired from Del Monte Properties, Sand Division in 1960, after 27 years. He also owned and operated, along with his immediate family, Campos Air and Ocean Freight, Inc. from 1960 until retiring in the early 1990s due to health reasons. The family continued running the business until 2002.
Hilo loved working with his hands, building the family home in Del Rey Oaks. He also enjoyed taking cruises including voyages to the Caribbean, Alaska, Mexican Rivera and a 21-day trip to China and other Asian destinations. Dancing was also a favorite activity of Hilo's. He and Joan would be the first on the dance floor and the last to leave.
Hilo was a lifetime member of the Monterey Elks Lodge 1285; a member of the Del Rey Oaks Moose Lodge; the Monterey History and Art Association; and a significant contributor to the La Merienda and Cascarone Ball. He was also a life member of the Monterey County Horse Show and for years sponsored the barrel race event. Ê
Hilo is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan Campos; his son, Herman Campos IV (Robin); his daughter, Jodie Adam (Tommy); sisters, Teresa and Josephine; brother, David; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Frank; sister, Esther and brother, Nick; mother and father, Narcissa and Nickalos Campos. Nickalos was also well known and loved in Monterey. In the early days he was an ambassador to the Mexican people who were moving to the Peninsula. Nickalos was also known as "The Barber," having a barber shop in Monterey. Prior to his demise, Nickalos and his family ran the Xochimilco Mexican Restaurant on Tyler Street in Monterey. Hilo's Godfather was Manuel Campos of Monterey.
Thank you to Amy, Dr. Ginger and their staff who gave Hilo such good care from the Heartland Home Health Care hospice group. Also thank you to Dr. Tapson for his care given to Hilo over the years.
Burial services will be private (Pastor Koontz, from Cool, California will officiate, services will be provided by Paul Mortuary). A Memorial Service and luncheon in Hilo's honor will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the Monterey Elks Lodge, 150 Mar Vista Drive in Monterey from 12:00noon-3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hilo's name to The SPCA for Monterey County or to the Monterey Elks Lodge 1285.
