September 23, 1938 ~ January 27, 2013
SALINAS - John Edward Durichek, Jr., 74, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013, after a period of declining health, and joined his Heavenly Father for eternal rest.
John was born on September 23, 1938, the son of John Edward Durichek, Sr., and Veronica Mary Gaffney of Philadelphia, PA. He grew up on Benner Street, raised by a loving circle of aunts and his mother as his father served in the Navy as a Chief Yeoman Officer during World War II and the Korean War. John graduated from La Salle College High School in 1956. He joined the Civil Air Patrol's 31st Wing as a young man, and enlisted in the Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1960 and subsequently moved to California.Ê
He studied biotechnology at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, where he graduated with an Associate's degree in 1966. After working in this field for a few years, John began what would be a long career as a production control manager in the computer chip industry, employed by cutting edge companies such as Zilog and Siliconix. He later earned certification in Hazardous Waste Management at UC Berkeley and worked with local FEMA agencies. John possessed an impeccable work ethic, managing several property units during his life in addition to maintaining his career and raising two children on his own.Ê
Blessed with a gorgeous silver-grey mane and the air of a sophisticated bon vivant, he also did modeling part time to the delight of his family and friends. John had a deep love for nature and enjoyed camping and outdoor recreational activities. He began woodworking and cabinetry later in life, often making home improvements. John was an avid collector of war-time memorabilia and an amateur war historian, having been influenced by his father's career and growing up during our nation's major conflicts. He was a deeply religious man and often gave generously of his time and resources to his local church community.
John is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Marie Haas; two sons, John Edward III and Guy Jerome and three grandchildren, Elsa Lee Durichek-Pierson, Sebastian Matthew Durichek, and Tyler James Durichek. He was preceded in death by his sister, Veronica Mary Durichek-Amy.
John's family would like to express their gratitude to all the medical staff at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital ICU who helped care for John. He was treated like a family member and received care that was second to none.
