Rep. Holmes Obituary
Montgomery - HOLMES, Rep. Alvin A., in loving memory, former State Representative, passed away on November 21, 2020. A lifetime Montgomery resident, he was the last of eleven siblings born to the late John H. Holmes and Willie Ann Holmes. Graveside and burial service will be held Sunday, November 29, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery with Pastor Courtney Meadows officiating. The staff of E. G. Cummings Memorial Funeral Home directing. The family request no flowers. Contributions may be made to Hutchinson Missionary Baptist Church or your favorite charity. Public viewing will be held Saturday, November 28, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at E. G. Cummings Memorial Funeral Home.

Alvin was a dedicated and determined classmate at Alabama State University. We were in the Freshman class in 1962. Alvin was a focused and determined student. He was very courageous. He had the longest tenure as a State Representative. He was very instrumental in providing funding for Alabama State University. His legacy will always be cherished.

I grew up involved in marches under Mr. Holmes he often came to our house where I lived with my grandmother Ethel Perkins & they would all meet up & make plans to do these marches and I have enjoyed being his next door neighbor he was a very smart man dedicated to equality

My memories of Alvin began in 1958 as a Freshman on the campus of ASU. Alvin always had great stature despite his height. Alvin had the ability to very ably convince his audience to agree with his position on an issue. Our class of 1962 honored Alvin on our Golden Anniversary In 2012. The Honorable State Representative Alvin Holmes was a “Trailblazer and Friend to All.”
He lived up to the charge in the hymn of our Alma Mater “And we stand on college heights content with God’s decree for All he does is right and good and makes for Liberty”

I grew up hearing Alvin Holmes name as a little girl in Montgomery, Alabama. It was not uncommon to see him around town with a warm kind smile speaking to those whom he met. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched in Montgomery, Alabama. My deepest condolences and sympathy to the Holmes family at this difficult time. May you find comfort in God's word at 2 Corthians 1:3, " the God (Jehovah) of all comfort.

Rep. Alvin Holmes will always be remembered by the people of Alabama for his great service to us. We could count on him to speak up about any injustices that he was aware of. He was a great help at passing many important and needed bills for the betterment of the city and state. His voice has been missed and will continue to be missed.
