Bell, Charles Austin, Lt.Col., USAF, Ret. At age 93, Charles, known as "Tiger" to his family and friends, died peacefully in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 23, 2013. He was born in Hereford, Texas, the son of Texas pioneers Allan Grafton Bell and Lena Rivers Daniel. He is survived by his son Charles Thomas (Tom) Bell (Cindy) and daughter Carol Austin Bell Kendrick; grandchildren Sarah Bell, Andrew Bell (Amy), Austin Kendrick Cook (Christopher), Allison Kendrick, and Kathryn Kendrick; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Betty K. Bell. In 1937 he entered Texas A & M University and studied Mechanical Engineering until leaving in 1940 to join the Army Air Corps, beginning a 28-year career serving his country. He served with the armed forces in the Canal Zone during World War II, maintaining the radar defenses of the island, and in Vietnam in 1965/66 where he was assigned to MAC-V in Saigon. He retired from the Air Force in 1968 and was an agent for New York Life for several years. Tiger was an avid golfer and active member of the Montgomery Golfers' Association. He was a long time member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church. Tiger is lovingly remembered by his family and friends for his positive outlook on life. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at Holy Comforter on Tuesday, March 26, at 1:00 pm. Following the service there will be a visitation at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Holy Comforter Outreach (2911 Woodley Road, Montgomery, 36111) or Hospice of Montgomery (1111 Holloway Pk, Montgomery, 36117).
