Ralph M. Garrard, Mississippi native and long-time resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, passed away January 8th, 2014 in Montgomery, Alabama, where he moved after Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home. He was 88 years old.

Garrard was owner of Garrard Chevrolet in New Orleans for nearly 40 years and helped establish the company in 1952. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Air Force as a Lieutenant/Navigator on a B-24. A graduate of Ole Miss in the School of Engineering, he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. A benefactor of Ole Miss and Tulane University, he was also a board member of the Ole Miss Business School, as well as St. Martin's Protestant Episcopal School.
A former president of both the Louisiana and the New Orleans Automobile Dealer Associations, he was also a member of the Downtown New Orleans Rotary Club, the Young Presidents Organization, the New Orleans Country Club for 47 years, a member of The Montgomery Country Club and Wildcat Cliffs Country Club in Highlands, NC. He belonged to the Rayne United Methodist Church in New Orleans and the First United Methodist Church in Montgomery.
Garrard's wife, Dorothy, of 56 years predeceased him in 2008. A daughter, Sandra Garrard Marshall, died in 1984. He is survived by two children: Dr. R. M. Chip (Linda) Garrard of Montgomery and Bris Garrard (Paul Manouvrier) Campbell of New Orleans. Grandchildren include: J. Patrick (Melissa) Campbell of Baton Rouge, William Garrard Marshall of New Orleans, Matthew M. (Charlotte) Garrard of Mobile and Ansley Stewart Garrard of New Orleans. Great-grandchildren include: Jackson Campbell, Greyson Campbell and Matthew M. Garrard, Jr. Other survivors are two sisters, Mary Henley of Brandon, Mississippi and Patricia Stanley of Flowery Branch, Georgia. John W. Garrard, a brother, resides in Isola, Mississippi.
The Funeral Service will be at 12 p.m. in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans on Sunday, January 12th, 2014. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in the Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans. No flowers are requested. Donations may be made to The Sandra Garrard Art Lecture Series, Tulane University, 6823 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70118.
