Rev. Merle E. Hall, age 98, of Morris, Illinois, passed away Sunday morning, June 8, 2014, at the Park Point Healthcare Center.
He was born on May 12, 1916 in Harding, Illinois, the son of the late Lester and Alva (Benson) Hall.
On June 18, 1946, he married Lois Hathorn in Harding Methodist Church, Harding Illinois.
Rev. Hall graduated from Cornell College in 1945 and received his Masters of Divinity from Garrett Seminary in 1948.
He served with the American Field Service during World War II, receiving the British Empire Medal for his actions taken on the battlefield.
Rev. Hall began serving the Lord in 1939, as a local preacher serving various churches in rural Illinois. He became a fully ordained minister of the United Methodist Church, Northern Illinois Conference in 1949. He was honored to serve congregations at Ohio, Ashton, Ottawa (Epworth), Lockport (First), Oak Lawn(Garden), and Dixon (First). He retired in 1978. In retirement, he served as a substitute pastor for many of the churches in Morris. Rev. Hall was the oldest ordained minister in the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church
Rev. Hall was an active volunteer in many organizations including Methodist Men, Retired Methodist Ministers of Northern Illinois, Lions, Morris Mobile Meals, and served as a board member with We Care and Prisoner Release Ministry.
He enjoyed walking, reading, woodworking, and flying, earning his private pilot's license at the age of 72. Most importantly, he enjoyed living his faith by helping people, usually behind the scenes.
Surviving are his two sons, Steven (Pat) Hall of Fontana, WI, and Thomas (Sue) Hall of Morris, IL; three grandchildren, Cory (Amy) Hall, Jennifer (Eben) Darling, and Casey (Kelly) Hall; four great grandchildren, Rylee, Willa, Macy, and George; one brother-in-law, Lyle Hathorn.
Rev. Hall was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; one son and his wife, Craig (Jill) Hall.
A Celebration of Rev. Hall's Life will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at 2:30 PM at First United Methodist Church, Morris, Illinois with Rev. Deborah Percell officiating. Rev. Hall's family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church beginning at 1:30 PM until the time of services. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Morris, Illinois.
Memorials may be made in Rev. Hall's name to the First United Methodist Church of Morris, Illinois - Youth Service Fund.
