Antonia Gambino, 58, passed away peacefully, Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012 at Raritan Health and Extended Care surrounded by her loving family. Born in Palermo, Italy, she was the 10th child of Domenico and Sarina Campisi Gambino. Antonia came to America in 1966. She attended special education classes in Somerset County and lived at home until 1972. She then lived at the Mobus Avenue Group Home in North Plainfield until April 19, 2007, at which time she became a resident of Raritan Health and Extended Care. The Hospice Compassionate Care also cared for her during her last month of life. Antonia enjoyed working in the Somerset County ARC sheltered workshops and was an excellent worker. She was a fun loving daughter, sister, co-worker and friend. In her leisure she enjoyed dancing and making hooked rugs which she gave away as gifts. She loved participating in the Special Olympics each year and won several medals.
She was pre-deceased by her father, Domenico R. Gambino on May 26, 1954 and her mother, Sarina Campisi Gambino on January 1, 2003, and three infant siblings. She is survived by two brothers, Umberto R. Gambino of Mexico City, Mexico and Renato A. Gambino of Costa Rica; four sisters, Anna R. Belica of Middlesex, NJ, Giuliana M. Drong of Belle Mead, NJ, Wanda Sheatler of Bloomsburg, Pa, Beniamina C. Surenko of Bound Brook, NJ and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 12, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the Middlesex Funeral Home, Bound Brook Road, Middlesex, NJ. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Somerset County ARC, 141 S. Main St., Manville, NJ or Compassionate Care Hospice of Branchburg, NJ 08876.
