Charles George Metzler, affectionately known as "Red," passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Memory Care Living in Chester, NJ. He was 88 years old. He was born on November 6, 1925 in Far Hills, NJ, son of Asa and Thelma Metzler. He was a graduate of Bernards High School in Bernardsville, NJ. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. Following an honorable discharge, Red returned home to NJ where he met his wife, Virginia. They were married on April 7, 1952.
As a lifelong resident of Whitehouse Station, NJ, he retired from Readington Township in 1989. He was also a lifetime member of the Whitehouse Station Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching NASCAR races and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard Metzler; and beloved wife, Virginia "Gin" Metzler.
Left to cherish his memory are his son Robin Metzler, and his longtime companion, Kathy Ardoline, of Bethlehem, PA and his daughter, Penny Moore, and her husband, Douglas of Three Bridges, NJ.
As well as his five grandchildren, Todd Metzler of Columbus, MT; Rebecca Allan (Moore) of Morris Plains, NJ; Allyson Hickswa of Bethlehem, PA; Courtney Moore of Washington, DC; and Meredith Metzler of Saylorsburg, PA. Along with five great-children: Caleb, Jackson, Layne, Cameron and Liberty. He will be deeply missed by his sister, Lola Connor of Alpha, NJ. He will also be missed by many additional family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at 3:00pm at the Whitehouse Fire Station, 271 Main Street, Whitehouse Station, NJ. A private burial will be held at later date at Somerset Hill Memorial Park. Arrangements are being made by Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ 08833.
