Mr. Donald Keegan passed away Wednesday August 21st, 2013 at his home in North Brunswick. He was 84 years old. Born in Brooklyn, NY on Feb. 20, 1929 to Simon and Helen (Lanigan) Keegan, he attended school in Brooklyn at St. Augustine's High School and St. Leonard's Academy. He worked at the Keegan family's California Quarry in the Stone Caverns of Woodstock in NY and Keegan Brothers Trucking before joining the U.S. Coast Guard in 1951. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. That same year, Mr. Keegan married the love of his life, Irene (Garner). They went on to raise 9 children together. Mr. Keegan worked as an accountant in the Plainfield, Somerville, and Somerset divisions of Mack Trucks Inc. from 1955 until his retirement in 1991. He then worked for 10 years for Barker Bus of Bridgewater and 2 years at Atlantic Bus Company. Mr. Keegan was an active member of United Auto Workers Region 9, and former president of U.A.W. Local #229.
Donald Keegan was predeceased by his wife, Irene, in April of this year;by his two sons, John and David, and by his brother, Richard Keegan and his sisters, Anne Keegan, Adelaide Rowe, Mary Lou McNally, and Helen Quigley.
He is survived by his children, Peter D. Keegan and his wife Janis of S.Carolina, Mary Abeyta and her husband Gerald of Princeton, Kathleen K. Locatell and her husband Joseph of Hillsborough, Donna Vogt and her husband Terry of N. Carolina, Patricia Keegan Cassidy and her fiancée, Angelo Trento, Christopher R. Keegan and wife Laura of N. Brunswick, and Kevin P. Keegan and his wife Kelly of Somerset; by his grandchildren, Sean, Richard, Candice, Paul, Megan, Jason, Joseph, Jonathan, Clare, Zachary, Brandon, Morgan, and Kimberly; 8 great-grandchildren; and by his brother, Edward Keegan and sister Joan Hafford.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 pm Sunday (today) at the Gleason Funeral Home 1360 Hamilton St. Somerset, NJ 08873. The funeral mass will begin at 10:30 am Monday at St. Mary Mount Virgin Church in New Brunswick. Entombment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park in North Brunswick.
