Obituary Condolences

Frederick D. Grossman

AGE: 86 • Monroe Twp.

Frederick D. Grossman, known as Fred, longtime editor of the Daily Racing Form, died on Sunday, July 6, 2014. He was 86 years old and lived in Monroe Township, NJ. The son of Russian immigrants, Elsie Davis and Isadore Grossman, he grew up in Brooklyn, NY. The first in his family to attend college, Mr. Grossman graduated from New York University at the age of 19, with a degree in Government. But all he wanted was to be a "newspaperman." Drafted into the army during the Korean War, Private First Class Grossman was assigned editor of the base newspaper at Ft. Jackson, Columbia, SC. Upon his discharge, he returned to his position on the copy desk of The Morning Telegraph, the flagship publication of the Triangle Publications empire, owned by Ambassador Walter Annenberg, with whom he had a warm relationship. The Telegraph was memorialized in the movie "The Sting," and in the Broadway Show," Guys and Dolls." He quickly rose to the position of Assistant Editor and assumed the Editorship around 1975. He was an integral part of the team that successfully merged The Telegraph with its sister newspaper, The Daily Racing Form, which together covered the horseracing industry nationally and internationally. He built the organization, growing and strengthening it, and was at the helm when it was purchased by Rupert Murdoch in 1990, and then by KKR in 1994. Mr. Grossman stayed on as editor until his retirement; a career with the Daily Racing Form lasting 43 years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Arlene Gurshman Grossman; two daughters, Paula Joffe and Ellen Lieber; 4 grandchildren; a sister, Eileen Yasgur of Polk City, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
