George Captain, Sr. made his transition to heaven on February 22, 2013 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was 83. Born in Brooklyn, New York to the late William and Pauline Captain, he was raised in Perth Amboy and lived there before moving to Edison in 1955.
He had owned and operated the Superior Diner in Perth Amboy and also had worked for the United States General Services Administration (GSA) in Belle Mead for 35 years before retiring in 1984. He had served as president of the AFL-CIO Local 2041 in Belle Mead. He was a master mechanic who could fix anything. Mr. Captain had served as a machinist in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Piscataway. He enjoyed cooking, pinochle, boating, playing the lottery and tending to his vegetable garden. He played many musical instruments. George touched the hearts of all he met and lent his assistance to everyone that needed help. He was not only a father but a best friend and shall be sadly missed by all but will not be forgotten as he will continue to live in the hearts of those who knew him.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years Katherine "Mary" Theofilos Captain; son George Captain, Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Aberdeen, son Jeffrey Captain of Edison, daughter Patricia Captain of Edison and daughter Christine Perrine and her husband James of Somerset; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be 10AM Wednesday at Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick. Burial will follow in Van Liew Cemetery in North Brunswick. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM.
