Gerard Bornemann Sr., 61, of Brick, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Ocean Medical Center, surrounded by the love of his family. Gerard was born in Jersey City and raised in Woodbridge. He had been a resident of Brick for the past 36 years. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and saw action at Da Nang, Quang Tri, and the Hue Easter Offensive of 1972. He worked as an HVAC contractor, and was a 30-year member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, Local 9, before retiring. He enjoyed trips to Atlantic City casinos, but above all, was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who loved to spend time with his family.
Gerard was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Mildred (McGuckin) Bornemann, to whom he was a devoted son and caretaker. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Kathleen (Collins). He is also survived by his children, Gerard and Carol Bornemann, Heather and Michael Drew, Maureen Bornemann and Marc Alexander, and Megan Bornemann, and his grandchildren, Gerard, Carissa, Kate, Kara, Rebecca, and Madalyn. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses, Edward and Barbara Bornemann, Richard and Kathy Bornemann, Joann and Nick Rinaldi, Janice Murphy, Eileen and Dave Delator, and Brian and Joyce Bornemann, his brothers-in-law, George Collins, and Edward and Tara Collins, as well as many nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, with a funeral service at 3 p.m. and military honors at 5 p.m. at O'Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. Cremation will take place privately. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gerard's memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
