Gilbert H. Wester, 90, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Raritan Health and Extended Care in Raritan. Born in Irvington, Gilbert resided there most of his life before moving to Bridgewater 28 years ago. Mr. Wester proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp. during World War II, attaining the rank of Platoon Sergeant and was the recipient of the Purple Heart after being wounded on March 2, 1945 on Iwo Jima.
Gilbert worked as a Tool and Die Maker for the former King Manufacturing Co. of Union for 45 years, until retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Military Order of Purple Heart and the Stevenson-D'Alessio American Legion Post #12, Somerville. Gilbert was a history buff who enjoyed building model ships and was an avid reader. He enjoyed spending quality time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years, Lillian Giacona Wester; his loving son, Gregory Wester and his wife, Dorothy of Toms River; his loving daughter, Fran Wester and her partner, Ann of Verona; his five cherished grandchildren, Melanie, Melissa (Joe), Maggie, Gregory (Jennifer), and Michelle (Wayne); his cherished great-grandchildren, Emily, Alyssa, Joey, Myles, Wayne, Gregory, Landyn, and Jolie; and several nieces and nephew.
A Prayer Service with Military Honors will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at Branchburg Funeral Home, 910 US Highway 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876 (908) 526-7638. Viewing hours will be held on Monday, May 7, 2012 from 7 to 9 PM and Tuesday morning from 9 AM until service time.
