Joseph "Joe" Kuzma, 97, of Iselin, died Friday May 30 at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick with his family by his side.
He was born in Perth Amboy, grew up in Avenel and moved to Iselin where he raised his family. He had lived in Whitehouse Station before moving back to Iselin in 2009.
Joe was a hardworking, kind and giving man. He always enjoyed helping other people and his main hobby was reading about current events in newspapers and magazines. He delighted in telling stories about living during the Great Depression and his army experiences in World War 2. He was a topnotch handy man who could fix just about anything. He was very devoted to his two grandchildren, Lori and Stephen.
Joe proudly served in the army in World War 2, enlisting several months before Pearl Harbor and served to the duration of the war. He was a Technical Sergeant (T/3) with the 3458th Ordnance (Medium Automotive Maintenance) Company. When his unit was sent overseas he was stationed in North Africa, Italy and Corsica. Joe is the recipient of the American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and World War 2 Victory Medal.
His work career included the following companies: National Pneumatic in Rahway, American Can of Newark and General Motors of Linden.
He worked for Merck & Company in Rahway for 35 years. This is where Joe met his loving wife, Helen, the mother of his two children. He had many varying jobs at the company including inspector, lab technician, mailroom clerk, stationery stores clerk and finally retired from Merck working in Mechanical Stores.
Joe was predeceased by his first wife, Helen (Kardel), his second wife, Tessie and his brothers John, Steve, Michael and his sister Mary (Mim) Thorne. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey and his wife, Barbara of Iselin, his daughter Charlotte Morse and her husband, Larry of Whitehouse Station, his sister, Eugenia (Jean) Hricay of Rahway, his grandchildren Lori and Stephen (now serving in the US Army) and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd at 9 AM at the GOSSELIN FUNERAL HOME, 660 New Dover Road, Edison, followed by a 10 AM Mass at St. Cecelia's RC Church, Iselin. Burial to follow in St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Colonia. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 2nd from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the funeral home.
