Leonard W. Martin

AGE: 83 • Readingtown Township

Leonard William Martin of Readington Township passed away suddenly at Hunterdon Medical Center on January 3, 2013. He was born in Prospect Park, Pennsylvania on January 7, 1929. A biology teacher at Somerville High School for 39 years, he was named Teacher of the Year in 1988 prior to his retirement in 1992. He held a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois and a Masters Degree from Temple University. He received three National Science Foundation scholarships for summer studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara, Arizona State University and at Rutgers University.

Mr. Martin was a very active volunteer in the community. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Somerset County. He served as Secretary of the Somerset County Teachers Federal Credit Union and Treasurer and President of the Hunterdon ARC. He also served as a lay leader at the Whitehouse United Methodist Church, and on the Readington Township Environmental Commission, and as a member of the Hunterdon County Republican Committee. Besides spending time with family and friends, Len enjoyed travel, gardening, reading and the great outdoors. Len was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Mabel Martin, as well as five siblings, Frederick, Harold, Robert, Al and Kathryn. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Haines Martin, and three children, Caroline Browne of Bernardsville, New Jersey, Sarah Martin of Flemington, New Jersey, and Leonard Martin of Germany. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Lindsay Browne, Andrew Browne, Lauren Browne, Matthew Martin and Zachary Martin, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the ARC of Hunterdon County, or to the Whitehouse United Methodist Church, or to the Center for Educational Advancement in Flemington.
