Maureen S. Hreha, 64, of Edison, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family. Born in Staten Island, she was a lifelong resident of Edison. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970 with a B.S. in Nursing and New York University in 1974 with a M.A. in Educational Psychology. In 1983, she received her M.S. in Nursing from University of Pennsylvania and became a board certified Nurse Practitioner. A dedicated professional, Maureen began her career in nursing before transitioning to education. She spent 14 years as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Nursing at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center; she co-founded the American Nanny Academy in 1985; she worked as an adjunct professor at Rutgers College of Nursing for 10 years and ended her career as an Associate Professor at Raritan Valley College for 18 years.

Maureen fought hard to preserve Edison's Oak Tree Pond as part of the Edison Wetlands Preservation Commission, she consulted on the Muhlenberg Hospital Pediatric Health Promotion Home Care Project; she worked with St. Claire's Home for Children with AIDS, and she served on the Early Childhood Education and Child Care Advisory Committee. Maureen was a parishioner of St. Helena's RC Church, Edison.

She is predeceased by her parents, Michael and Margaret Simko. Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Michael Hreha, son Adam and his wife Candice Ling and Eric and his wife Kate; sisters Kathleen Babich and her husband Charles and Eileen Minte and her husband Geoff. She was blessed with three grandchildren Logan, Kai and Brooke.

Funeral services will take place Monday at 8:45am at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave. (Rt27) Metuchen (costello-runyon.com) followed by a 9:30am Funeral Mass at St. Helena's RC Church, Edison. Visitation is Sunday 2-4 and 7-9. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to their own favorite charity in Maureen's name.
