AGE: 90 • Waretown
Raymond Zander age 90 of Waretown passed away on Thursday May 1, 2014 at his home. Ray was born and raised in Hillside and had resided in Union, Elizabeth and Bridgewater before retiring to Waretown. Ray served in the US Army during World War II in Company C, 692nd Tank Destroyer BN, he also served with the 42nd Rainbow Division and the 104th Timberwolves Infantry Division, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Silver Star and the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Cranford Chapter #28, and had served as Commander for many years. He also belonged to the Disabled American Veteran's of Somerville, and Lacey, Chapter #232, American Legion John Wesley Taylor Post #232, Barnegat, VFW of Kenilworth, Veteran's of the Battle of the Bulge, Ft. Dix-McGuire Chapter, 42nd Rainbow Division Eastern Region Chapter, and the Raritan Valley Grange #153, South Branch and had served as President for many years. Mr. Zander was an industrial metal engraver for Acromark of Elizabeth for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anna Joyce, his nieces Gale Sonnentag, Marita Zander, Evelyn Garrett and Mary Ann Dzubinski, nephews Chris and Arthur Zander, John, Richard and Michael Tetar, and Adolph Kubicek. He is also survived by a great niece Jennifer Taylor and great nephew Eric Sonnentag and three great great nephews and one cousin Frederick Ressler.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday May 6, 2014 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm and on Wednesday from 9:30- 10:00 am, at the Riggs Funeral home, 130 Rt. 9 North, Forked River, NJ 08731, followed by burial and Army Military Honors at 11:00 am at the Brigadier William C. Doyle Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Road, Arneytown, NJ. In lieu of flowers contributions to Popcorn Park Zoo, PO Box 43, Forked River, NJ 08731, or to St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center, 575 Woodland Road, Madison, NJ 07940 in his memory.
