Richard J. Heym died Friday, November 29, 2013, at St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 71. He was born in New York, NY. He was an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard for 27 years, having served during the Vietnam War and having been stationed across the U.S.; including Portland, ME, Monterey, CA, Governors Island, NY, and New Orleans, LA. He was awarded the CG Commendation Medal with three bronze stars, Vietnam service medal with two bronze stars, Sea Service Deployment ribbon with three bronze stars; and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm unit citation. After retiring from the Coast Guard in 1990, he worked for K-Sea Transportation in Staten Island, NY, for 16 years, retiring permanently in Milltown, NJ, in 1996. Capt. Heym was a communicant of St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church, East Brunswick. He was a fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Staten Island, NY. He was a member of the Milltown Senior Citizens and the Milltown Bridge Club.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Ann Marie Reagan Heym; 2 sons, Richard Jr. and Robert of Milltown; 2 daughters, Heather Szeles and her husband Stephen of Hightstown, and Christine Lopez and her husband Sergio of Edison; a brother William Heym of North Carolina; a sister Catherine Williams of Mississippi; and 5 grandchildren, Sergio III, Alexandra, Amanda, Elizabeth and Amy.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, 8:15 AM, at The BRUNSWICK MEMORIAL HOME, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, followed by a 9:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church, East Brunswick.
