Robert Bustamante

AGE: 93 • Metuchen

Robert Bustamante, 93, of Metuchen, NJ passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014, after a brief illness. He is survived by his two sisters, Alice Romero and Helen Leal, both of Santa Paula, CA, as well as niece Kimberle Bennett of Delran, NJ and many nieces and nephews, all from California. A veteran of WWII, Bustamante was a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge Unity 1109. He was also a former first Vice-Commander of Peru Post No. 1 of the American Legion in Lima, Peru; a former president of New York's Triple E (Ethical Export Executives) Club, a former member of the Lima, Peru Lion's Club and a charter member of the Lima, Peru Junior Chamber of Commerce. Bustamante retired in 1989 after a long career in the pharmaceutical industry. He started with 11 years at Johnson & Johnson's International Division, serving in Latin America as their representative and manager in Chile and Bolivia. He then transferred to the parent company in the USA where he was assigned Territorial Management responsibilities and later named Sales Trainer for the Eastern Sales Division. From Johnson & Johnson he went on to a 20 year career with the Ayerst Division of American Home Products Corporation (now part of Pfizer). While there he worked his way up the corporate ladder, reaching the position of Vice President in charge of the areas of Asia, Australia and New Zealand. In 1974, the Wall Street Journal announced his promotion to CEO and President of Ayerst International. In his private life, Bob treasured nearly 70 years of marriage with his beautiful bride Doris. He took great interest in the ambitions and accomplishments of his nieces and nephews. He was an animal lover and enjoyed many years with his loyal companions by his side. Bob was an avid sports fan, and followed his favorite teams faithfully. He greatly enjoyed his daily chats with his best friend and neighbor of almost 50 years, Bob Nelson. In addition to all of these pastimes, he loved reading, writing memoirs and listening to music, especially jazz. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Doris, his parents Joe and Angelita Bustamante, a brother Eddie Bustamante, sisters Josephine Barajas and Hortensia Chavez and nephew Daniel Chavez. Services will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 10:30 Am at First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen 270 Woodbridge Ave. Metuchen, interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Metuchen.
