Robert L. Towns, 80, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013 at St. Peter's University Medical Center after a prolonged illness. He was born to the late Rev. Earl Towns and Eva Cole Smith, Sept 6, 1932 in Tifton, GA. Robert graduated from Tifton High School and attended Rutgers University. He married Catherine Smith in 1955, and they resided in Somerset, NJ for 57 years.
Robert, affectionately called "Bob", worked at E.R. Squibb's in New Brunswick, NJ from 1952 to 1960. During this time, he entered the U.S. Army in Fort Dix, New Jersey and served in the Korean War. In November 1960, Bob started his career with the United States Postal Service as a sub letter carrier. He was promoted to Supervisor at the Somerset Post Office in 1969, and worked in that capacity until his retirement in January 2005.
Bob joined the National Association of Postal Supervisors in 1969 and served as an officer in the organization at the local and state levels before being appointed as a Mideast Area Vice President where he served for twenty years. Bob was dedicated to fighting for the rights of postal employees and was well known throughout the community for helping and encouraging others.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Catherine and three children: Jacquelynn Stevenson, Karen Towns-Worsley (George), and Randall Towns; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at 9:30-11:00AM followed by the funeral service at 11AM Friday, March 22nd at First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset, NJ. Interment will be at Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick, under the direction of Anderson Funeral Service, New Brunswick.
